Facts
1) El Yunque is home to 70 kinds of birds, 225 kinds of trees, 11 kinds of bats, 8 kinds of lizards and 13 kinds
of coqui.
2) It is under administration of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)
3) It is one of the smallest in the forest service and one of the oldest in the western hemisphere and the only tropical
rainforest in the USFSS ( United States Forest Service
System)
4) It is located at 25 miles east of San Juan.
5)In 1876 El Yunque was set aside or protected by the King of Spain.
6) In 1903 it was acquired by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)
7) El Yunque is a important source of water in the island.
8) It is made of 4 different types of forest growth that are: Tabonuco Forest, Palo Colorado Forest, Palma
Sierra Forest, and Dwarf Forest.
9) The Dwarf Forest is at the very top of the mountains and it is filled with trees that are about the same height as
a full grown adult.
10) El Yunque is home to over 225 species of trees and plants, 26of which are found nowhere else.
11) It is the rainiest of all national forest with up to 240 inches of rain per year.
12) Its temperature are very fresh and vary from 77F to 65F.]
13) There are 11 rivers born in El Yunque and we can mention : Rio Grande de Loiza, Rio Espiritu Santo, Rio Mameyes, Rio
Sabana, Rio Fajardo, and ect.
14) he elevation goes from 330 ft through 3,530 ft over sea level.
15) Its highest peaks are: El Toro at 3,533 ft high, El Yunke at 3,496 ft high,
El Pico del Este at 3,446 ft high, Cacique at 3,346 ft high, Los Picachos at 3,175 ft high, Monte Britton at 3,075
ft high, La Mina at 3,055 ft high.
16) Between the years of 1935 to 1943 a group of civilians known as the Civilians Conservation Corps (CCC)
under the supervision of the forest service built the road through the mountains of the forest , and the roads are still in
use today.
17) During World War II in the 1940s over a quarter of a million feets of lumber from the forest were used
to make charcoal and sold for cooking fuel on the island this job was supervised by the Forest Service Officials.
18) Also during WWII the US army placed a radar on the second highest peak of the mountain which protected against invasions
of german aircrafts and submarines.
19) The forest is the only home to a endangered parrot called the Amazona Vittata or Puerto Rican Parrot.
20) In 2003 El Yunque celebrated a 100 years in the preservation of its species and life.
