THE BEGINNING: At first the Taíno Indians inhabited El Yunque calling it "Yuke" which means sacred land or white lands
because on the peaks of the mountains you could touch the clouds, they also thought that the god of good called "Yuquíyu"
lived in those mountains , who protects the Taíno indians.
THE SPANIARDS: When the spaniards got to Puerto Rico the Taínos explained what was El Yunque but misunderstanding
through there language differences they renamed the forest from El Yuke to El Yunque. In 1876 the Alfonso
XII the King of Spain set aside all of El Yunque beacause of its beatiful scenery.
THE AMERICANS: In 1898 through the Spanish-American War Spain shamefully gave away Puerto Ricoto the USA as a prize after
USA won. In 1903 Theodore Roosvelt established El Yunque as the Luquillo Forest Reserve. On April 2, 2007 President George
W. Bush signed an executive order renaming the Carribean National Forest as El Yunque National Forest the new name reflects
the culture of the Puerto Rican people.
NOW: Now El Yunque is working with capturing the Puerto Rican Parrot and hoping of breeding in captivity to one day have
a normal population of this endangered specie. Visiting El Yunque is an unforgetable trip that is packed with fun, adventure,
history, and nature.I am sure that every time i have gone and each time i will go i willl always learn a new thing in each
visit because you can not learn all of El Yunque in only one trip.
